about

“This was no game show. It was punk performance art. It was chaos wrapped in a song.” – Lloyd Gedye writing in the Mail & Guardian on The Buckfever Underground’s launch show for ‘Verkeerdevlei’

“’Verkeerdevlei won’t make you dance. But it will make you think. Amongst South African bands, very few stir this kind of emotion in their listener. The Buckfever Underground is one of them.” – Pieter Redelinghuys writing in Die Burger (loosely translated)

‘Verkeerdevlei’ is The Buckfever Underground’s 7th release, and their first full-length studio album since 2007’s ‘Saves’. It was recorded over a frenetic weekend at T-Time Studios in Brackenfell in October 2011 – all 14 tracks from the session made it onto the album. Engineered and mixed by Tim Rankin (Bed on Bricks, Dorp etc), the album somehow flows smoothly from start to finish despite all the weird turns taken along the way.

Expect ninja-like red-winged starlings, small-town murder, a port-fuelled trainride and a kite surveying Rwanda from up high. There’s spoken word, there’s some singing, there’s English and Afrikaans. There’s even Björk-name-checking, some movie opening credits re-imagined and new reasons to go to the mall. Or was that the maul?

Guest musicians include Juliana Venter (Spooky Attraction From A Distance, ex-Mud Ensemble), Mavis Vermaak, Jane Breetzke (ex-Cassette), Jacob Petrus van Schalkwyk (Jaco+Z-Dog) and Lou-Ann Stone (saxophone genius).

The Buckfever Underground has been around since 1998 when then students Toast Coetzer (vocals, lyrics) and Gilad Hockman (bass) started the band in Grahamstown. Jon Savage (keyboard) soon joined with Stephen Timm (drums) and Righard Kapp (guitar) joining after the band had relocated to Cape Town in the early 2000s.

5 sterre

Na my mening is The Buckfever Underground Suid-Afrika se mees onderskatte groep.

Hy is ’n stemmingskepper eerder as ’n kitaarspeler op Verkeerdevlei.
